The Comet Girls Basketball team has gotten off to great start to the season. Heading into Christmas break the Comets are 9-2 and are rated 10th in the class 2A rankings. Bellevue sits in second place in the River Valley North Division behind Cascade who defeated the Comets 61-50 a couple of weeks ago. Monticello is responsible for the other blemish on the record defeating a shorthanded Comet squat 46-42 in the first game of the season.
The biggest win of the season so far was a 39-29 victory over then 2nd rated Regina. The Comets followed that up by defeating a very good East Dubuque squad and Class 3A 7th rated Camanche. Other victories include wins over Northeast, Marquette, Durant, North Cedar, West Liberty, and Wahlert.
This year’s Comet squad features a balanced offensive attack with three players averaging double figures in points led by Giana Michels (Jr.) at 13.6 ppg. Camryn Reeg (Sr) and Emma Kelchen (Sr) are scoring at a 12.7 and 10.7 ppg clip. On the boards, Bellevue touts the state’s leading rebounder in Rebecca Schroeder. So far the senior has hauled in 127 rebounds for an 11.5 rpg average. Defensive specialist Kailey Miller (Jr) rounds out the starting five. Miller draws the teams toughest offensive opponent and has become one of the top defensive players in the league with her ability to hold opponents well under their offensive average. Bench players Lindsey Banowetz, Alyssa Rubel, and Teresa Paulsen have all contributed key minutes and have been instrumental in the overall success of the team.
The Comets will next be in action on January 2 at home versus Monticello. Come out and support our Comets! For complete stats go here and search for Bellevue under the team tab.
